All eligible applicants for the nursing course are to be accepted, the government announced this evening. As a result, the course intake will rise from 90 to 165 full time students.

The decision was taken at a meeting between the Ministry of Education, the Office of the Parliamentary Secretary for Health and the University of Malta.

The increased intake will be accommodated through restructuring and extension of time tables.

As in previous years all applicants who applied under the maturity clause but are not in possession of the academic qualifications will be assessed for their suitability to pursue studies in these courses and if need be will also be provided with career guidance towards alternatives within the health care sector.

The government said it would explore the possibility of launching a part-time course in nursing to increase capacity in training more students for this profession.

Applicants who are sitting for their MATSEC September resits will be provided with career guidance with a view to their joining other health care courses

During this meeting it was clarified that the 140 students (the amount which was referred last week) that could be accepted by the University for the BSc (Hons) and the Diploma in Health Science (Nursing) courses was based on the maximum available training placements within the Maltese Health sector, in particular in maternity and child care.
