Waste collector jailed for 27 months

A waste collector was jailed for two years and three months and fined €300 after his driving licence was suspended twice in the past year but he continued to operate.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna handed down judgment yesterday after Giuseppe Zahra, 49, pleaded guilty on Thursday to driving recklessly, without a licence or insurance cover. Police Inspector Arthur Mercieca arraigned Mr Zahra after he was involved in a collision in Żejtun last week. The court heard that Mr Zahra had already been fined €3,000 in May and had his driving licence suspended for a year after he admitted to attacking a policeman. Despite the conviction he continued to drive. Legal aid lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores appeared for Mr Zahra.
