Local councils are to start opening on Saturdays as from October, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said during the annual meeting of the Local Councils Association, held today. The meeting was attended by more than 450 councillors.

Dr Said said that wide consultation had taken place during the year and 122 decisions which were now being implemented.

He said that many schemes had been designed specifically to meet the needs of councils. These included accessibility, sports, energy saving and cultural schemes. The 2010 funds for the latter had been doubled.

Three localities were also given the necessary funds to prepare a holistic report on sustainable localities. The clean localities initiative, which took the form of a competition for the cleanest locality in summer was currently going on.

Dr Said said that towards the end of the year the enforcement system was being changed to become more suitable at bringing order in the localities while educating the public.
