A Nigerian man was charged with trying to import a kilo of heroin, which he ingested in about 100 capsules for the puny reward of €1,000.

Bunch Nnaka, 34, sobbed loudly as he stood in the dock yesterday. He denied bringing in the capsules on Tuesday.

Police sources said that during interrogation he admitted he had been instructed to leave the heroin at a hotel in St Julians and would have received about €1,000 as payment.

Mr Nnaka pleaded not guilty to possession and conspiracy to traffic heroin and was remanded in custody.
