Jail for reckless driver
A waste collector who yesterday pleaded guilty to driving recklessly without a licence or insurance, has been jailed for two years and three months.
Giuseppe Zahra, 49, had his driving licence suspended twice in the past year was arraigned yesterday after he crashed into another car in Żejtun last Wednesday, slightly injuring the driver.
Last May, Mr Zahra was fined €3,000 and had his driving licence suspended for a year after he admitted to attacking a policeman. Even then, when he was stopped, Mr Zahra had been driving without a licence because a court had suspended it for one year in May 2008.

It is much better to have persons like this guy locked up than to have more fatalities on our roads.

They better build a much larger jail because the roads of Malta and Gozo are all populated with reckless drivers. They speed around blind corners and everywhere else with impunity because the traffic laws are very seldom enforced. Why a day does not go by when you don't read in the Times of a traffic fatality or a crash resulting in serious injuries. I have yet to see a motorist pulled over in Malta. They actually have Speed Cameras in place to curb down on those going over the limit but they warn you when when you get close to the camera so that you can hit the brakes and avoid the fine.. Comic relief indeed..Time to lock those that flaunt the law so brazenly and make the roads a little safer.

@Chris Camilleri yes i wonder how many so called drivers in Malta bought their licence over the counter, just come to Gozo and you might even spot the clowns. I totally agree a jail sentence is the only way, after all its our lives that is at risk. 3 cheers for the Maltese courts. well done finally! Lock them up and i think there should be spot checks as other countries have adopted over the past 15 years. Just remember the case of the 4 year old little girl that was crashed against a wall because of a moron just like the one in question.

Nothing to do with this but general road safety -
All drivers on our roads ought to view.

Twice today on the Birguma bypass I came across overtaking cars coming uphill towards me on the wrong side of the road in spite of the 'No Overtaking' signage !
Are we so resigned to our fate that we don't care about others ?

Stickers with the words " How's my driving ? " has mushroomed in recent years over the developed world.
There's a toll free sticker to report showing concern for the well-being of other drivers and avoiding accidents. It has been a success with less fatalities and accidents on the highway.
However is it impolitic to say what I think of this man's driving ? .......Is it ?.... No ? Well then..
Sorry Sir , you are not fit to drive in the developed world. Why Sir , don't you try the Sahara desert ?
Wishing you the best of luck and remember that camels won't forget easily.

PROSIT! Dawn sentenzi li jaghtu l-ezempju u li jekk isiru regola t-toroq taghna jitnaddfu u jsiru aktar siguri. Jekk niffullaw il-habs tinkwetaw xejn, nitfu aktar minn habsi wiehed f'cella wahda kif jaghmlu barra. Il-habs fuq kollox post ta` kastig u mhux irtir.

Thanks Mr Magistrate. This guy should be banned for years from driving after he gets out of jail.

AT LAST .This is the attitude we have to take , alot of drivers having the licence withdrawn they still go out there and drive , they thin k they have nothing else to lose , but if they know they can serve jail they think twice before they commit and break the law , Well we know he wouldnt be driving for a while , i think this is the right action to take if we want to keep MALTA safe.

Ghalkemm mad-daqqa t'ghajn sentejn u tlett xhur habs jidhru esagerati, meta taqra l-istorja kollha tinduna li s-sentenza kienet gusta. Meta l-gudikanti taghna jiddeciedu b'dal mod, ikollhom l-ammirazzjoni ta kullhadd, almenu ta dawk ta rieda tajba. B'daqsekk m'hinix nghid li gudikant ghandu jiddeciedi skond ma jixtiequ n-nies, ghax dan jista jkun perikoluz hafna, ixda biss mill-ligi, mill-provi u l-fatti u l-gudizzju tieghu fuqhom, ghax ghalhekk id-deterrent, minkejja l-ligi, m'hux awtomatiku, biex il-gustizzja, xi haga li bhala bnedmin ma nistawx nilhqu, inqarrbuwha kemm jista jkun.

Some people never learn not even the hard way. The warder should throw away the key.
