As a regular temporary resident of Għarb, I am appalled to read about the mushroom factory that is being proposed close to the Ta' Dbiegi crafts village, the Kempinski Hotel, San Lawrenz and Għarb.

Perhaps it is worthwhile for me to remind myself and readers why I have chosen to spend extended times living in Għarb.

I was directed to Gozo by a friend in Malta who praised the smaller island's tranquillity and stark beauty. That was evident as soon as I started driving around Gozo. It was particularly noticeable when I reached the far western side and found the two charming villages of Għarb and San Lawrenz set in an area of particular beauty, with Dwejra just down the road.

Perhaps, due to the familiarity of these places, Gozitans and Maltese residents forget how stunning this part of the island is.

I cannot imagine the damage this factory would cause to the surrounding area. The massive amount of chicken excrement and straw that the place will require will cause a stench that will ruin the locality, drive tourists away and blight the life of residents for as long as the factory is there.

And when the wind blows - and we all know that it does - I suspect the smell will reach all the nearby towns, including Victoria.

I appeal to all Gozitans and temporary residents like myself to oppose this factory and ensure that planning permission for such an ill-conceived idea is not granted.
