More than 60 tonnes of glass, seven tonnes of cardboard, more than three tonnes of plastic and two tonnes of metal were collected over the past eight months from catering and retail operators at Valletta Waterfront and sent for recycling.

The system was introduced through the Malta Hotels & Restaurant Association in collaboration with Green Dot Malta, operators of the GreenPak scheme.

As less material was being disposed in the organic waste stream, Viset decided to reduce their twice daily collection of 20 skips to a once daily collection of 14 skips. This means less traffic on the roads and less CO2 emissions.

To mark the success of the first stage of the project, certificates of merit were awarded to the best three performing outlets by the Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco. They are Agenda Book Shop, CasaNova, and Q Bar.

The project was initiated last December 4.
