Update 2: Members of Graffitti chain themselves to Mepa

Protest brought to a halt

A protest against permits issued by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority came to a sudden halt when policemen cut the chains with which protesters had chained themselves to the authority's entrance.

The protesters, who were about 15 and who are members of the Moviment Graffitti left quietly once their chains were cut off.

They were protesting against various permits “that favour speculation and disregard the environment”.

These permits included that for the Qala Belvedere, the supermarket in Safi and the MIDI complex in Sliema.

Spokesman Andre Callus said protesters wanted to draw attention to the fact that no reform would perform miracles but that Mepa would only function properly if there was the political will.
