World champions South Africa moved closer to wrapping up this year's Tri-Nations with a 32-25 win over Australia at Perth's Subiaco Oval yesterday. The unbeaten Springboks scored four tries to seal their first bonus point of the season and extend their lead over New Zealand at the top of the standings to nine points.

Swimming

Twelve-times Olympic medallist Dara Torres underwent successful hernia surgery at the Surgery Center of Coral Springs and is resting at her home. Torres said she was going to meet with a doctor in Boston this week to discuss an upcoming operation to repair the cartilage in her arthritic left knee.

Golf

World number two Phil Mickelson will play in this week's Deutsche Bank Championship. Mickelson has played only three tournaments since the US Open in June after taking time off to be with his wife Amy and his mother Mary, who were recently diagnosed with breast cancer.

Basketball

Lithuanian NBA star Zydrunas Ilgauskas has adopted two orphaned boys in his homeland. The Baltic News Service said the 34-year-old Cleveland Cavaliers centre and his wife Jennifer had completed adoption procedures and left Lithuania on Friday with the two youngsters. The boys, aged three and four, had been brought up in an orphanage in Kaunas.
