South Korea's Ki-Chun Wang retained his -73kg title at the World Championships in Rotterdam on Thursday while Japan's Misato Nakamura clinched the women's -52kg crown. Olympic Games silver medallist Wang was the favourite going into the tournament having won the Paris and Moscow Grand Slam titles this season and claimed his victory over North Korea's Kim Choi Su.
Doping
New Zealand marathon runner Liza Hunter-Galvan was banned for two years after testing positive for EPO. Hunter-Galvan tested positive to the banned substance at an out-of-competition test conducted at her home in the US in March this year. Hunter-Galvan represented New Zealand at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, finishing 51st.
Tennis
Former junior Australian Open champion Brydan Klein said he is on his final warning as he serves out a suspension for making a racial slur against an opponent. Klein, 19, was handed a six-month ban, by the ATP for calling black South African Raven Klaasen a "kaffir" during the Eastbourne International in June. As part of his punishment Klein was required to undergo a racial sensitivity course, which is likely to reduce his ban to four months, enabling him to return to competitive tennis by mid-November.
Motor racing
Bahrain could replace Australia as 2010 F1 season-opener while Canada may also re-appear on the calendar, BMW-Sauber boss Mario Theissen said. "Both scenarios are in discussion, but I haven't seen a finalised calendar," Theissen said when asked whether Bahrain or Australia featured first on a provisional calendar shown to teams by Bernie Ecclestone.
Tennis
The top seeds in both the men's and women's events at the New Haven Open lost on Thursday as Russian pair Svetlana Kuznetsova and Nikolay Davydenko bowed out with quarter-final defeats. Kuznetsova was unable to shake off Amelie Mauresmo who won 7-6 2-6 6-3. American Sam Querrey overpowered Davydenko in a dramatic 6-3 3-6 6-4 triumph.
