A 21-year-old Italian who defiled a 16-year-old Mongolian in a hotel last Saturday has been given a suspended jail term.
The man, who cannot be named by court order, admitted to defiling the girl and participating in sexual acts with her.
The two met in a bar and then went back to the Italian man's hotel room. Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how the parents decided to renounce to the criminal proceedings against the man because the relationship was consensual.
The court handed down a six-month jail term suspended for three years.
Police Inspectors Raymond Aquilina and Bernard Spiteri prosecuted.
