Over €200,000 are believed to have been stolen in a hold-up on a 42-year-old Egyptian in Gudja late yesterday afternoon, sources said.

The man was assaulted as he was walking to his car parked in Ħal Resqun Road at about 5 p.m., the police said. The place is not very far from the airport.

An ambulance took the Egyptian national to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment. He is not thought to have sustained serious injuries.

The police said the thieves made their escape in a van.

The amount of cash stolen was not given by the police who only said it was "considerable".
