SmartCity Malta taking shape
The foundation and retaining structure works of the first building at Smart City Malta have been completed and the company is now engaged in the construction of the super-structure.
Aligned with this structural progress, the façade works have also commenced with the appointed local contractor.
The first building will consist of 12,000 square meters of ready-to-use Grade A offices to be completed and handed over to the first business partners by 2010, as scheduled.
SmartCity Malta has submitted its application to the Malta Environment and Planning Authority for the site-wide grading permit for all phases of the self-sustained business township which will cover the lagoon, shopping boulevard and the residential area. The tender for the site-wide grading has also been issued and grading works are expected to start shortly.
SmartCity Malta has also invested in an extensive value-engineering exercise to maximise the efficiency of the design and implementation of the entire project. This has resulted in drastic volumetric reductions of excavated earthwork material which is recycled and rehabilitated on site.
The planning and construction works at SmartCity Malta are shaping up at a fast pace and the building structure is on target according to plan, the company said.

Do you note, dear Maltese citizens the preoccupation of il-lejburisti? They are so anxious to see the project of Smart City fall through. Il tono fa la musica. Not what they say, but how they say it. They are only interested in gaining power at any cost. They couldn't care less about the well being of the country. Jekk jitilghu fi-gvern huma....x,jinteressahom mill-haddiem. DIK IPOKRISIJA!!! I don't know if any of you took a look at the time line of smart city. http://www.3amsystems.com/smart-city-malta.htm If I understood correctly… the plan is to build 12,000 sqm by end of 2010 ie. Completion of 8% of the office space and welcoming the first tenants. The full ICT & media business park is 103000 sqm which will be fully completed by Dec-2015 according to the plan. So in my opinion they have enough time left to keep with deadlines. ----------------------------- @Paul Smith Where are the facts??? A lot of people here just comment, just to say something… UAE have about 20 years more of proven reserves of oil. And revenues from petroleum and natural gas contribute less than 6% of their economy. Apart from the fact that Smart City has nothing to do with the UAE Government. -------------------------- Thanks

So the guys from Dubai are saying that this will be open for business in July 2010? Ok lets give them that (although it is virtually impossible unless someone has Aladdin's lamp), so are they expecting tenants to lease space in a block situated in the middle of a building site ?
In my opinion these wise guys dont even know the fundamentals of building large scale projects such as this one, otherwise they would have first and foremost concentrated on creating a destination in a piece of (beautiful) land which has been neglected. It is now more evident that the large projects carried out in Dubai were done by expats (EUropeans ,american, australians) and not by the guys from Dubai, thats why the success story.
Very soon it we be called FJASK CITY.

I remain sceptical.I do believe that the project will eventually be completed. However the company has slowed its world wide operations, even cancelled some major projects. It seems very unrealistic to think that the Maltese project is somehow fully shielded.
Personally, I believe only the construction work which they are already contractually tied into will continue unabated. The remaining phases will probably be delayed until the situation improves. A company faced with a sudden cashflow problem and spiralling cost of capital has little other alternatives.
However, I do not think that the project is facing a severe risk of being cancelled. It has been professional evaluated and has a strong business plan. The local government is in support of the project, and a sufficient return on investment was forecasted - even in a dampened economic environment. Of all projects sitting in such an investor’s brief, the Maltese site is probably amongst the least risky.
On a side note, it is very interesting to hear people comment about the global recession so surely. Economists are confused by the results from the confidence survey results and few have taken clear positions on whether we will face a W shaped recovery or not.

How many times will have this project be changed again before it is finished?? Don't do the same mistake as our State of the Art. Stick to a good plan and don't waiste money...
Many comments are right. Where are the workers? Is this photo a gimic to many rumors of people, only this part is ready in all these months. How is possible to FINISH 12,000 sqr mtr in a year or they will use LEGO bricks?
What will do all these IT graduates if this project fails ????

I honestly hope that this project goes on, however.......

One can easily count 30blocks excluding the villa residential area and general landscaping plus lagoon. The block in the photo above has been going on for nearly one year. Everyone can calculate the time this is going to take......By this time there should be 10 tower cranes working round the clock.

SmartCity what? It took all this time to erect this block of 'flats'? Sorry you said '12,000 square meters of ready-to-use Grade A offices' and what about the IT infrustructure? Seeing the few heavy machinery in use this is a farce! Go and watch the new American Embassy being built at Ta' Qali - that is Grade A, and in record time the project is at a very advanced stage!

In my opinion, this will never come about, with the UAE governments even canceling projects in Dubai and not having enough money to complete building plans in there own country. Dubai has more bank debt than it has oil left to service that debt. 100% Smart city will be one big white elephant - i said it from the word go and stand by my words. Also whom is going to take office space in this global reccesion - It's a W shaped recovery and the worst is still not over. If the project is completed it will be the Maltese tax payer holding the debt for it all.

Good to hear.. this at least removes any doubt about this project. Sceptics have been passing rumours around that Smart City Malta is being liquidated and the project was put on hold.
I can't wait to see the southern part of Malta regenerated by this and the many projects intended for this area in the years to come.

A sigh of relief. I've been hearing rumours that Smart city would not materialise as the main shareholders are pulling out. It would be a pity on the local economy. Having said that I hope that what has been promised will eventually come into effect in terms of the impact of this project on the environment. We've had enough flops lately with apologies in the aftermath and no accountability whatsoever!

"handed over to the first business partners by 2010, as scheduled".
Are they sure about this? How are they expecting IT (or similiar) companies to operate form a building site with no infrastruture ready?
