Anyone who wants a handle on the Maltese psyche could do a lot worse than read the online comments in The Times to every press release, news story or even letter.

This is really the heart of Malta, far more than the actual letters, opinion pieces or editorials themselves.

Often, those commenting online start boxing and fighting each other and totally forget what and who they were commenting on. It is hilarious.

A recent battle between PN and PL supporters caught my eye. Labour asked for a holistic plan for Cottonera. This seems utterly sensible and I thought the PN used to talk about this years ago too. So much of Malta, 45 years after Independence, is now ruined and frankly so ugly that our only redeeming features left, as far as visiting tourists go, are really Valletta, Mdina and Cottonera.

May all this bickering actually result in the one which has certainly been the poor relation, that is Cottonera, and now needs the most work done to it not least because it covers such a large area, being properly revived. And may our taxes be used wisely and judiciously to truly improve more of the Cottonera area for local residents, visitors and the tourists we need so badly to visit Malta, to come back again, and to plug it with their friends and families.
