Eighteen months have already passed since the Nationalist Party claimed, yet again, victory at the polls during the last general election.

To some it came as no surprise; to those within the inner blue circle of trust it came as a warning and for many of the Labour Party supporters it was a sure blow. Twenty-one years in government is no joke. You can be as diehard a Nationalist as they may come but the truth remains the same; being governed year in year out by the same party for 21 years is an old recipe that leads to only one reality: disaster. Of course, one can always hope for the better, that is perfectly normal, and one can always come to one's own conclusions whether one's preferred party is or has performed to its utmost to fulfil the many electoral promises that appeared like heaven-sent manna on the eve of each general election.

Our society cannot comply with certain unsocial measures, especially when these measures are taken by a party that proclaims itself to be the "saintly party". Nevertheless, I'm sure that a very high percentage of the population has now moved away from certain Church-related dogmas and realised that the time spent on this earth is a God-given luxury that needs and can only be nurtured by social progress and not by political gimmicks.

As far as polls go, the latest European Party elections exposed the people's true feelings; they went well beyond the colours they normally go for.

The politicians in power need to understand one vital norm: greed is sister to sin and brother to murder.

The people have spoken; their message was clear. We want change. If that wasn't clear enough, then the party in government is not fit to govern these islands any longer. Being in power is one thing, using it for good is a completely different story.

The Labour movement, lead by Joseph Muscat, is a sure bet, which people are now sensing from miles away.

The stinking political measures being forced down society's throat are not helping the PN one bit. What they are really doing is drag this outdated government further into oblivion.

The Labour leader knows this well. His message of hope, unity and prosperity in times where people are crying out for a clear direction and a much better future is being welcomed with open arms. The writing is clearly on the wall and Dr Muscat is interpreting the words very well.

Whatever the EP result may have produced and however one may interpret that result, the truth is that Dr Muscat is pulling the people towards him, just like an incredible tide. The gap between the two major political parties has never been so wide. Irrespective of what the opinionated may conclude, the result sent a clear message of disgruntlement, sorrow and sadness, which is growing daily in our country.

If this government really cares about this country and its people then it needs to radically change the way in which it is governing. It is a country that is not made up of a minor "well-off" sector but of hundreds of "well underpaid" families facing a daily lifestyle struggle and crying for a helping hand. This is the time for the government to stop and think, to come back down to earth and be sensitive to what the majority of the people of this country are feeling. If it's true that in the government's eyes we are one nation, then everybody must have the same opportunities to achieve what s/he may desire.

We cannot possibly accept that our vote is not respected. We express what we feel about our political parties through our vote and in a true democratic state that should be enough to produce the desired change the people voted for.

We have had enough of gimmicks, enough of broken promises, enough of rising power and gas bills, enough of incompetence, enough of irresponsibility, enough of our daily financial struggles, enough of our pitiful salaries, enough with our "monstrous" cost of living and never-ending taxes, enough of the same old faces, which marked a tough political era in our lives.

Yes, we want change and if the message wasn't clear enough then just keep doing what you are doing now, keep ignoring the people and keep heading towards world record electoral defeat.
