Malta was still not sending the EU detailed reports on air pollution, the Labour Party’s spokesman for the Environment, Leo Brincat said.
He said in a statement that the government had not yet found a solution to the particulate matter that was being emitted by the power stations. It also opted for a diesel operating plant for Delimara’s extension.
Mr Brincat said that the government chose a new plant that would have to be replaced and modified when the country started using gas for the production of electricity and which would continue polluting in the meantime.
This was when European power plants had substantially reduced their emissions by installing better abatement equipment. They also started using cleaner fuels to substantially improve efficiency.
In the case of Malta, it was worrying that that the proposed abatement equipment for the power station was to be tested for the first time by Malta. The German experts described it as a plausible project.
Mr Brincat said that the government was still not publishing detailed statistics, village by village, of how many Maltese and Gozitans had died from cancer in recent years.
