The name of the capital city

The capital city of Malta is derived from the name of its founder under whose command Malta defeated the Turks. I am referring to Jean Parisot de la Valette.

It is noted that the name of our capital city is written with a double "l" while the name of the Grand Master after whom it is called "de la Valette" is written with one "l".

Is there any reason for this difference?

De la Valette corresponds to the origin of the Grand Master like all the French nobles of his time.

With double "l" vallette means a small valley.

But far from being a valley Valletta is a hill.

Is it not time to drop one "l" and write Valette or Valetta with a single "l" to recall properly its founder?

The orthography of surnames does not change according to the country's language. Christian names yes but not surnames.

A written order in the Government gazzette is enough to put things right, and everybody will follow suit.

The musical band is known as La Valette and not La Valletta, hence we should always write the name La Valette and not Valetta.

In a couple of words our capital city is not "Valletta" but "La Valette".
