I refer to the letter of August 12 by the president of the Chamber of Architects criticising this Ministry for passing a remark in reply to questions put earlier by The Times that may have hurt Maltese members of the architecture profession.
I do not hesitate to assume personal responsibility for the remarks and apologise for any displeasure they may have caused. Allow me to assure the Chamber of Architects that we have full confidence and entirely appreciate the qualities of Maltese architects. We have engaged local architects to work on major delicate projects such as St Elmo, the Marsa Menqa, the breakwater bridge and the Upper Barrakka lift among several others and their work has consistently proven to be of the highest quality.
In insisting that Renzo Piano's record and international renown should be given some credence when assessing his claims and hopes for the city entrance project, the contrast drawn with architects of less renown and world repute was exaggerated.
