Maltese citizens have been informed that the long-awaited Whistleblower Bill should be presented in Parliament by the end of this year.

The proposed law aims to protect individuals who reveal misconduct or wrongdoings within an organisation.

Under the Act, a civil servant who, for example, reveals malpractice in a government department would be protected by law. Thus, there is the chance that the civil service becomes more accountable and transparent.

Through this new law the Maltese people's role in society would be strengthened and the battle against corruption and wrongdoing in a democracy would be intensified.

This legislation, if drafted well and sails safely through Parliament, should give more confidence to people to report illegal activities and not remain silent.

Besides, the intention of the lawmaker is to protect those who came forward with information on possible crimes.

So my question is this: Will this Bill protect only those who report injustices in the civil service and within an organisation? Will a Maltese citizen be protected when he reveals illegalities in society at large outside organisations?
