Migration proving to be "a very challenging problem for Malta" - Joseph Muscat
The illegal migration problem had come to a crucial point and was proving to be very challenging for Malta, Labour leader Joseph Muscat said this evening.
Speaking during a meeting with the Libyan Secretary for Foreign Affairs Suleiman al Shahoumi, Dr Muscat referred to the current issue Malta had with Italy over its Search and Rescue area and said that no one should trample on Malta’s sovereignity
Dr Muscat looked forward to a stronger relationship between Malta and Libya not just from the economic aspect but also on a friendship basis.
Mr al Shahoumi was invited to Malta by the Labour Party to take part in a conference organised by its international secretary on the 40 years of bilateral relations between the two countries.
He said that the PL’s invitation confirmed the very good relations between Libya and the Labour Party. He paid tribute to all the Maltese who worked for the bilateral relations between the two countries to continue strengthening.

Yes it is challenging because all efforts are directed in the direction of the illegal migrants and the problems that illegal migration is causing. Very little effort is visibly being directed at tackling the real root of the issue - (very well) organised criminal organisations.

25 years of "wasted" opportunities. Whilst the US UK and Italy fought over trade relationships, our "professional" diplomats and foreign ministers, were simply " cannoli bla krema"!

to continue with what jcmicallef said about italy's misinformation to the (italian) public, they are always confusing the territorial waters with the SAR, to the extent that many Italians are under the impression that Maltese territorial waters include Lampedusa. Unbelievable the lenghts they go to villify Malta and glorify themselves. Malta is rarely seen acting as it should in their eyes, and the bad thing is that the cling (quite stongly) to the fact that this is due to Malta's large SAR. They are slowly brainwashing their people into thinking of Malta as the country stealing money off the EU to use it to something else other than it is supposed to. They do not believe that that money is not sufficient to curb Malta's immigration problem.
There is also a considerable number of italians under the impression that the Maltese are shoving thier responsabilities on Italy. And they are angry when their government 'gives in' to "tiny" Malta. In short, they find it an insult that a big country like Italy has to put up with a tiny country like ours. Somehow though, that makes me proud :)

Its becoming very challenging indeed to believe the history books that we Maltese won the Great Siege as well as deffended our Island during WWII. How come we cannot withstand the influx of illegal immigrants? The two parties must work together.
As for the Italians, we all know how ethical they are in their news. They provoke you to make the first wrong move. Well done Minister Tonio Borg--keep strong and show them who the maltese are.

Challenging only because of hopeless government and an army that is not defending us during this invasion!

In perfect agreement with Denis Catania.
Even more so when one hears the Italian media with its misinformation. today, rai, mediaset and LA7 reported the incident as if Malta was trying to hide something (it dealt with the issue of maltese life jackets given to immigrants).
They are also taking the story of the 75 lost immigrants as true with hardly and proof except for the shaky evidenc eof the 5 'surviors'.
Whats worse, Mediaset (with its shoddy journalists) described Malta as a country whose main income depended on fishing and agriculture!!!!!

Both parties need to work together to solve the immigration problem, involving ex-presidents of Malta and or ex-prime ministers in the negotiations to strike a similar deal Italy has with Libya. The two parties need to work for the interest of the Maltese and not just for the parties. This meeting can be the beginning of something good.
