Regular meetings at places of work should be held with workers’ organisations and employers to address the problem of occupational accidents, the Labour Party’s main spokesman for employment, Anglu Farrugia, said.

He said it was positive that occupational accidents between April and June had been reduced by 29 percent over the same period last year but 858 workers still had to apply for injury benefits because they were injured on duty.

Spread over a year, this would translate into having 2.5 percent of the gainfully occupied having an occupational accident. In construction and manufacturing the rate was over four percent, Dr Farrugia noted.
