How much pesticide on Maltese produce?

A conversation with a dear one spurred this letter. Can we as Maltese consumers have some guarantee that local agrarian produce is being scrutinised before ending up on the market stalls? More specifically, is there some kind of (enforced) regulation on the use of pesticides for fruit and vegetables? And if there are indeed regulations to this effect, is the produce checked before being sold to pitkalija and then re-sold to the public?

I think the public has a right to know exactly what it is that is being consumed.

More importantly then, the option for imported produce becomes even more justified, since controls at European level are known to be stricter and probably appropriate frameworks exist to ensure adherence.

It would be nice to have some peace of mind on this issue.
