I refer to Ray Bondin's article Valletta's Protectors Are Us (August 20). Dr Bondin took exception to my article as he stated that I am "usually one of the strongest voices in favour of heritage protection", implying that this time round, in my article Lawrence's Gordian Knot (August 18), I was not.

The upshot of my article was that I was upset and disgusted that what has transpired now is equivalent to locking the stable door after the horses have bolted. Yes, I blame both Unesco and Mepa's DCC.

Nowhere in the actual Unesco report does it state that Valletta is in danger of losing its status despite the current rumours.

Be that as it may, had the buffer zone and high-rise issues not been taken into consideration when MIDI was being conceived then I am afraid both Unesco and Mepa are responsible. One is at a loss as to who is and, as I stated before, we may never know. MIDI was not, unlike something built by Aladdin's genie, built overnight.

What I tried to express in my article was "Why now?". I am sure that anyone with a modicum of common sense would agree that bringing the issue up at this stage is nonsensical and puts Malta, "us" and its state party into an impossible position.
