The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) Board today approved a development brief for the area known as Il-Ghirghien in Birzebbugia. Its purpose is to provide guidance for development within this area and encourage and promote an integrated planning approach for the future development of this area.

This was the first development brief to have been discussed and approved by the MEPA board in a public meeting. Late last June, the MEPA Board had postponed its decision following a prolific and participative discussion with the local council, residents and other interested parties in a public meeting.

The brief, now an approved part of the Marsaxlokk Bay Local Plan, provides for mixed development, new public open spaces and sports facilities.

A Pastoral Centre, located on a site flanking Triq ic-Cief and Triq il-Port Hieles, is being proposed together with other community facilities. The protection of historical and cultural features within the area, as well as the creation of recreational walkways, jogging paths and soft landscaping (particularly in the vicinity of Triq il-Port Hieles) are included.

The brief requires minister approval.
