It was a sad occasion to lose a friend of 60 years when Henry Micallef passed away last week at the venerable age of 85 years.
Born in Valletta in 1924, Henry lost his father at the tender age of four and was brought up with his brother and two sisters by a strong mother who lived to see all her children settled in life.
Educated at the Lyceum, Henry graduated as Legal Procurator from the Malta University and taught mathematics and physics at St Aloysius College for 14 years. He was very proud that many of his students achieved great success in their working lives.
He joined the National Bank of Malta and was promoted to General Manager where he contributed substantially in financing the tourist and manufacturing industries, which were still in their infancy in the 1960s.
All those who knew Henry will remember him for his readiness to help others, his positive thinking, sense of humour and practicality in his ways. He was very well read, an abundant source of information and always gave good advice. For 50 years he sat on the Board of Trustees of the Conservatorio Vincenzo Bugeja, to which he devoted much of his free time.
Henry spent the last years of his life also tending to his wife, Doris and his children Maureen, Christine, Mark and Helene are no doubt proud to have had such a father. All those who remember him are sorry for his demise despite God's gift to him of a long life.
