Pickpockets everywhere
I fully sympathise with Gertrude Abela (Picking A Pocket Or Two, August 17) for having lost her purse to a pickpocket. Shame, shame, shame!
Ms Abela seems to imply, however, that these things only happen in Malta: "Ladies beware when you are shopping anywhere in Malta and Gozo, you never know when it will happen to you." Now that is most unfair. For the record, I had my wallet stolen in Paris; my brother's was picked from his pocket in London and a close friend of mine's in Zurich.
Ladies and gentlemen, beware wherever you are, you never know when or when it will happen to you. I apologise to Ms Abela for stealing text from her letter.

Why is it that the Maltese are always in denial ? Who cares if there are pickpockets in Soho, Tokyio, Mexico, or anywhere else. The public and authorities here should only be interested in Malta's crimes / criminals, and forget what happens elsewhere in the World, as that is no consolation to the victims here !!.

Malta, Gozo, , Sicily, Pettycoat lane in London , Croatia ..etc..etc..etc..pick pocketing is done everywhere by humans, and notwithstanding that they are of the low-life type, they exist everywhere...so what’s the use of all the whining and finger pointing. Let’s hope that those caught are brought to justice and heavily fined for their rotten deeds.

@Nella Bencini you say most thieves are Maltese well i can't really believe that, because of the reports we read in the papers and ofcourse the best Paper of them all The Times, however this just shows that unemployment in Malta and Gozo is rising faster then ever same as in Britain & we are no exception, so these people result to nicking the oldest known trade in the world unless you happen to live in S.Arabian that is, there they tend to chop off whatever done the nicking., so Thieves pick pockets BEWARE! ask Fagon (pick a pocket or two).

Just in case Ms Abela said that 'these things only happen in Malta', all I can say is 'poppycock' (got that right as well, Mrs DCG?) since I can say that Malta is one of the safest countries in the world. It still is.

Thives are everywhere. Use your common sense when going to the beaches though, we have had endless spats in fontghadir, and yes while police men help, it would be far better if they wore civilian clothing, also, use your common sense, do not take wallets, mobiles, on the beach, take a few euros ... and leave that mobile behind, or do as we do, and that is asking those sitting around you to watch your stuff, while you watch theirs when going in for a swim, and incidentally, sadly most of the thives are Maltese!!

T.Borg that comment made me laugh for hours.. how very true my friend, but as a Gozitan without sounding like a know all, i can truely say that there are more chances of someone having his belonging stolen in Malta then in Gozo and thats a Fact. we have Honest people in Gozo, law abiding citizens and knwo how to treat the tourists and the Maltese, provided the see their way ofcourse, but in Malta and the point is who is really a Maltese living in Malta now a days, its more like the tower babeleveryone speaks all kind of languages under the sun and don't know who is who anymore. But in Gozo we are blessed by the Gods and hope it will remain so and not go down hill like the main island. Have fun Oliver

Some of the as reported in the media even had to gall to tell the court that they cannot be sent back because they are eu citizens!!!!!!!!!
They should be given the order of the boot and to hell with what the eu says.

Beware of some Romanians and Bulgarians especially as i never heard that those caught were sent to prison but were sent back home paying their tickets.
