I refer to Austin Bencini's article A Think-Tank's Anathema (August 13). The debate about divorce started ages ago, and perpetuates fruitlessly thanks to our conservative government and theoretically progressive socialist opposition. The state has been unable to move forward on the issue because of a succession of very conservative Prime Ministers and a Parliament replete with conservative MPs. What is ironic is that some MPs preach against divorce while they themselves have formed new families after separating from their spouses. Their opposition to divorce is baffling to say the least.

Divorce has been on AD's programme since 1992 and we have always been clear and constant on this issue unlike the PN and PL who beat about the bush. Obviously the Church has every right to voice its opinion on the subject, but the state should not be impeded in promulgating divorce, since this is a secular and not a religious matter.
