The Institute of Electrical and Electronice Engineers (IEEE) Malta section, in collaboration with the Malta Council for Science and Technology (MCST), recently organised a series of talks followed by a reception to mark the 125th anniversary of the institute. All the local members were invited.

To commemorate the event, two distinguished guests - MCST chairman Nicholas Sammut and Carmel Pulé, a university professor and engineer - were invited to give speeches.

The event was co-ordinated by the IEEE Malta section chairman Carl James Debono, with the help of a sub-committee headed by Clifford DeRaffaele.

Dr Debono opened the event with an introductory speech followed by a video highlighting the achievements and work of the IEEE over the past 125 years.

Dr Sammut gave an overview on the MCST.

Special emphasis was made on how local engineers can benefit from funds available through the EU.

Prof. Pulé entertained the audience with a philosophical talk about the development of the engineering profession.

He emphasised the need of giving students and future engineers the opportunity to think rather than learn by heart. He ended his talk by highlighting various engineering works of art that have been developed on the island throughout the past decades.

Those interested in joining the IEEE should e-mail the secretary at keithsacco@ieee.org.
