Marathon

World record holder Paula Radcliffe is to run in the New York half marathon tomorrow to discover if she is fit enough to race at the World Championships in Berlin the following weekend. The 35-year-old Briton had foot surgery in March and has not raced since winning the New York marathon in November.

Athletics

Ethiopia's Tirunesh Dibaba will be unable to defend her world 10,000m title after failing to recover from a leg injury. Dibaba, who also won the 5,000 and 10,000 at the Beijing Olympics, has not raced much this season but was hopeful of taking part in the World Championships after performing well at the London Grand Prix last month.

Olympics

The inclusion of women's boxing in the London 2012 Olympic Games programme for the first time will encourage more people to take up the 'dangerous sport'," the British Medical Association said. "The BMA is disappointed by the decision of the IOC to introduce women's boxing to the 2012 Olympics," the BMA said. "Irrespective of gender, boxers can suffer acute brain haemorrhage and serious damage to their eyes, ears and nose."

Golf

Blinded by the sun, all Vijay Singh could do was take aim, swing and wait for the crowd to judge the shot. When the gallery went wild, the Fijian knew it was a good one. In fact, Singh's nine-iron over a tree on Hazeltine's signature 16th hole was better than good, it was dazzling, coming to rest along on the edge of the hole for a tap-in birdie that lifted him to a three-under-par 69 after Thursday's first round of the PGA Championship. The 46-year-old finished the day two strokes behind leader Tiger Woods and one behind defending champion Padraig Harrington.

Tennis

Kim Clijsters has spent more time breastfeeding than playing tennis in the last two years but on Thursday still managed to add a reigning grand slam champion to her list of victims at the Cincinnati Open. In her first tournament since April 2007 the Belgian dispatched French Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 2-6 6-4. Were that not noteworthy enough, she immediately set her sights on a bigger trophy... world no.1 Dinara Safina.
