A Nigerian immigrant who tried to leave Malta using a false identity card has ended up with six months in prison.

Noah Adetoro, 27, pleaded guilty to using a forged Italian identity card because he wanted to get away from Malta.

"This summer I couldn't find a job, I had nothing to eat at home and I wanted to go to Italy," he said.

Defence lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores told Magistrate Doreen Clarke that Mr Adetoro was one example of many other desperate cases who feel that their only hope was to go abroad.

However, prosecuting inspector Nezren Grixti said many people were trying to leave Malta with false documents and a clear message had to be sent out that this was a serious crime.

Magistrate Clarke jailed him for six months.

Police Inspector Nezren Grixti prosecuted. Lawyer Renzo Porsella Flores appeared for Mr Adetoro.
