I am not writing this short letter to criticise any authority, local or central.

But I am putting pen to paper to express my disappointment concerning the way certain parts of Floriana are maintained.

I am referring to Gunlayer Street (from Capuchins' Street to St Anne Street), the pathways of the traffic island in St Anne Street, the patches of greenery around and near the War Memorial, St Publius Square, the parish church's pavement, Sir Luigi Preziosi Street etc. which are littered with broken glass and plastic bottles, take-away containers, paper and plastic bags, cigarette ends, pigeon droppings etc.

They indeed look dirty and very often pose a health hazard which is not expected from any town and village but more and more from the suburb which is the gateway to our capital city. Justly speaking it is not the fault of the street cleaners. They work very hard but their output is not appreciated. A hearty thanks goes to them and to those individuals who keep the Mall and the Herbert Ganado Gardens very clean.

What could be done? Are more rubbish bins the solution?

A thorough education campaign might help. But if these fail there is no other solution but heavy fines. We have to learn the hard way.
