Updated: Migrants' boat arrives back in Libya
A group of more than 80 migrants spotted on a boat south of Malta yesterday is back in Libya after the boat was intercepted by the Italian Navy.
A baby born on board the boat was airlifted to Mater Dei Hospital yesterday afternoon, along with the mother.
The boat at the time was some 90 nautical miles south east of Malta, heading north at a steady 6knots.

@ George Caruana
Why, for being happy that they all arrived safely in Tripoli? Shame on you since you are telling us that you wanted those poor souls to risk their lives trying to cross 90 miles in a rickity boat.

Could the N.G.O.s who take care of the illegal emigrants here in Malta check with the woman who was airlifted to safety by our A.F.M. after giving birth on the boat coming from Libya to see if she was being accompanied by her husband too? In that case they can send him the visiting hours at the Mater Dei hospital and an invitation to come and visit her after risking the life of her innocent baby. HE was not aware of the danger his mother was getting him into and that is why HE is innocent and not Her. When they are well enough to be able to travel they should be reunited with her husband to go and live happily ever after in Libya or from where she came from. Besides,in Malta you can be taken to court if you mistreat a child. Would in a case like this and the other similar cases before this, legal action be taken by the Police against the mother?

@ Kenneth Galea,
I Agree 100% with your comment.
George Caruana, shame on you if you agree with handing over our homeland to these invaders.

No shame at all, friend.
These people are better off in an islamic country like Libya that shares similar religious and african customs, ways of living, dress, food, festivities etc.. than ending up in some detention centre or open centre, on this already crowded island, eating away on our limited resources, clashing with our lifetyles and religious traditions.. Life is much easier there for them.. at least for the ones who make an effort.
There exists this illusion among many in Libya, even among the natives, that Malta and Europe are the free lands of opportunity. That you can go there and sit around and do nothing and live a cushy life. If anyone has been to Libya, they will see how so many people subscribe to the 'sit around and do nothing' lifestyle.
Living in Libya is cheap enough for one to be able to do that.

Some NGOs must have been disappointed with this ending?
@ George Caruana, shame on who? On the Italians for truning the boat back. This should be a lesson to all inspiring illegal immigrants in Libya trying to make a run for it, including pregrant women.

It had to be the Italian authoriies to do it and sent them back from the port of the departure. Thumbs uo and well done to the Italian authories, and thumbs dow to the Malta whoa are still incapable of taking such action.

Thank you Italian Navy for doing your duty in protecting your homeland (and in the process maybe even ours). The returning of the migrants to their point of departure, that is Libya, is the only logical solution to this problem. Our govt, unfortunately lacks the stamina to do the same.

This should have a dissuasive effect on all those illegal immigrants waiting on the Libyan coast to be trafficked to the shores of Europe. Libya and Italy should be thanked for their co-operation which is having indirectly a beneficial effect on Malta. This is the way things should be done and not the way of NGOs. Any genuine refugees should go and apply for refugee status at UNHCR’s office in Tripoli.
This good news comes shortly after the other piece of good news earlier this week: that of the repatriation of 49 illegal immigrants back to Ghana.

Even though to some it may sound a bit bad sending illegal migrants back to Tripoli, this will nonetheless act as a deterrent to future illegal immigrants and the human traffickers. Unless there is some deterrent of some form or other, such illegal immigrants will not think twice before embarking on such an adventure at the cost of their lives - and they will continue pouring in and swelling the already stretched resources in Malta. Besides, in future I am sure that this influx of illegal immigrants will negatively affect the structure of the Maltese community with their traditions, religion, customs. habits etc.. all of which are alien to a European country like Malta.

Let us now hope that the irresponsible woman who gave birth on this boat and was airlifted to Malta, will now be reunited with her friends back in Libya so that they can celebrate the happy event together.
If this is not done, the next boat will be full of 9 months' pregnant women on board all desperately trying to induce labour.

This is how things should have been done from the beginning. Had we done something similar we would not have these people roaming our streets with all the problems involved.
Well Berlusconi and Maroni; two pillars in Italian politics.

I would like the Italian ambassador to understand, that with this political policy, Italy has earned a very high respect from a greater number of new friends.

@Adrian Allain
Exactly my thoughts Adrian. If it were not for Maroni and Berlusconi we would have been totally swamped by these illegals this summer. Carm and Gonzi are NOT doing a thing, they are just posing infront of the cameras and too busy being politically correct.
What has Carm negotiated with Tripoli?? NOTHING is the answer. Gaddaffi has not probably heard of him. Pack it up PN!!!!!!

This is the way the system should work. Let's hope this happens every time from now on.
Well done the Italian Navy.
