Many years ago, the skies used to be dotted with kites in Malta. Unfortunately, this hobby/art has almost died.

A few days ago we met the kite master of Malta and former European kite champion, Lino Psaila of Żejtun, and he demonstrated to us how kites are made and eventually even took us for a spectacular train-kites flight at St Thomas Bay.

Mr Psaila doesn't fly one kite at a time but flies anywhere from 30 to 565 themed kites on one string. When we went with him, he flew the theme of the Grand Masters. He has several themes including the warships of World War II, surnames, football teams and so forth.

My wife, who never leaves the house without her camera, took a series of photos and also some videos and put together a youtube video showing the beauty of this hobby and art. Mr Psaila is also known for his book Il-Baħar Rasu Iebsa and he will soon publish a book in the Żejtun dialect.

To see the beauty and majesty of Mr Psaila's kites embellishing the skies of St Thomas Bay go to www.youtube.com/watch?v=8djQlC8u218.

You can also search youtube or Google for "jasalf5959 kites".

Will we see this art's revival again? It would be great if we do.
