The national agency against drug and alcohol abuse is pushing for "zero tolerance" to drinking and driving, highlighting the rampant abuse of alcohol throughout the year and no longer just during celebrations.

Sedqa's statement, calling for everyone to act responsibly and not at the expense of health, or at the risk of causing mishaps, comes in the wake of the recent death of cyclist, Clifford Micallef, who was run over by an alleged drunk and dangerous driver, Anthony Taliana, in a hit-and-run incident.

Mr Taliana has been accused of involuntary homicide and was placed under house arrest yesterday.

The agency issued the statement also in the context of summer being a time of holidays, feasts and partying.

It stressed on the importance of steering clear of getting behind the wheel under the influence of any amount of alcohol, which is scientifically proven to hinder reflexes.

Its message was that people driving under the influence were not only a danger to themselves but also to others.

The consumption of excessive amounts of alcohol could also lead to aggressive behaviour and unwanted sexual relationships. The agency qualified binge-drinking as drinking five or more alcohol units in one session.

It also warned about the dangers of mixing alcohol with illegal and prescribed drugs, which could lead to an overdose and other serious health complications.

It encouraged youths to participate in healthy leisure alternatives and party without resorting to substance abuse, which should not be considered an important factor in socialising.

Sedqa offers prevention and care services both within the community and in residential settings.
