Valletta heritage status: PL finds government reaction 'unacceptable'
The Labour Party said today that the government reaction to the risk that Valletta would lose its Unesco World Heritage Site status was poor and unacceptable.
The government had failed to explain how Malta had reached this stage when it was supposed to be basing its actions on sustainable development and protection of the nation's heritage. The situation was compounded by the fact that the government had been warned that Malta could be brought to this situation.
Labour spokesman Owen Bonnici asked what the government had done in the past two years to address the matter and what documentation it would now send Unesco.
Yesterday, the government said it would be studying and analysing Unesco’s communication on the World Heritage status of Valletta.
In a statement, the government said this analysis would include the recommendations made by Unesco.
“All statements made by Unesco regarding Valletta are given due consideration and importance, as government is committed to preserve the status of Valletta as a World Heritage Site.
“The relevant authorities, including Heritage Malta, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Mepa will be working together to reply and prepare the necessary briefs by February 2010,” it said.

if the pl has valid proposals or not there is only one way that this could be verified. off with this super minority government and let the movement with new ideas get to the helm of the country and not on this case only. now on a personal note. i have just passed by the mnajdra temples. i could not fathom what the monstrous building before one gets near the temples is standing there for.. these are the things that are degrading our historic sites david vella.

Alan Cassar,
To the contrary PL has already issued proposal after proposal of how to tackle the economic problems, even though these are not aired on the partisan communications media that you follow.
If Valletta loses its world heritage site status, the impact will not only be one exclusively on national pride, but will have economic upshots too (less tourists due to less visibility, for instance).
With comments like yours, the only pathetic person around is you.

Would just like to clarify two points:
In its statement ICOMOS Malta mentioned that local Members of ICOMOS would not take part in any evaluation or reporting that concerns a site in Malta. ICOMOS code of ethics precludes locals from participating so that no Members of ICOMOS Malta had a say in what has been decided upon.
Secondly this discussion predates the Piano proposals. Government is bound to inform UNESCO of all major projects in a world heritage site.

Alan Bugeja complains against the L.P. that after 25 yearsin opposition it did nothing to improve Malta situation;either financially or enviromentally.
Why don't you condem the L.P. for the mess the P.N. government is causing to the finances, and environment. In a few words for all the evils of the P.N. government.
And if we don't laugh after reading Alan Bugeja writings what could make us laugh. Clowns. There are alot within the P.N.

I agree it would be a big shame if Valletta lost its Unesco status.
Some areas of Valletta are is a sorry state. Luckily other areas have improved and there are ambitious plans .. but as always more can be done. How about PL lending a hand in improving the bastions Macina style, just lovely;)

What a waste of time... The PL will do better to wake up and propose a strategy for the economy of the country. we are in a recession and the only thing the PL does is commenting about the state of Valletta. How pathetic can they be?? Still more of the same.... especially for a party in opposition for 25 years and aspires to be in government soon... who knows...
