Government 'committed to preserve' Valletta status
The government will be studying and analysing Unesco’s communication on the World Heritage Status of Valletta, the DOI said in a statement this afternoon.
It was reacting to a story in The Times today which said that the capital's heritage status may be threatened.
In a statement, the government said this analysis would include the recommendations made by Unesco.
“All statements made by Unesco regarding Valletta are given due consideration and importance, as government is committed to preserve the status of Valletta as a World Heritage Site.
“The relevant authorities, including Heritage Malta, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Mepa will be working together to reply and prepare the necessary briefs by February 2010,” it said.

At LAST!!! A warning from Unesco, How I wish that the piano project will be scrapped and hopefully will surface in Dubai or any unfortunate country. I make myself clear, I dislike Piano and I really rose my eyebrows when PL accepted this project and supported the Government!!! HMMMMM I wonder why?? And here I shall Accuse the labour party why hasnt it criticised it when it broadcasted the news that Valletta might loose its unesco favour?
How suspicious and how hypocritical!! I hope that Gonzi will open his eyes because the only thing which will save his face is the fact that he had reservations about certain parts of the project. EXURGE GONZI and show us you mean business and tell PIANO to leave Malta molto fortissimo and not pianissimo. Look at Germany and the Germans they are rebuilding what was destroyed . Why are we destroying what wasnt destroyed?

i propose that the people involved in this mass murdering of culture and blunders all around the island to go and start a career in football. For those who might be asking why, its because they will definitely be top scorers. Come on guys.... the world cup is next year. You are still in time!
Excuse me people but i did not understand what is meant by this ...."The relevant authorities, including Heritage Malta, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Mepa will be working together to reply and prepare the necessary briefs by February 2010". Did these relevant authorities work together before this mess? By reply does this mean some lame excuse to justify irresponsibility and super mega incompetence? Why by February 2010? If everything was done in order everything would be prepared with nothing to hide!
The only solution for this is to try and make Tigne on the World Heritage Status. I wonder how the once great Grandmaster La Vallette would react if he were to come back.
Jokes apart if ever the capital city is to loose its status it would be the guillotine on the Maltese culture and rich history.

Did we have to arrive to this point if the goverment really wanted to really preserve the status of our capital. Stubborn is the only way that describes this administration .... and look and where it is leading our country......

OK please hush ladies and gentlemen. Government is studying.
There is no need for studying now. The damage is done. The skyline close to Valletta is ruined and unless some storeys are chopped down and Renzo Piano's plans for a roofless theatre and a parliament on stilts are shelved, UNESCO will not be satisfied.
@Mr Martinelli
I'm sure you were joking when you wrote "I believe the Opera House ruins is what made Valletta a World Heritage site"

Sounds hollow though doesn't it ? For commitment please read lip service and damage limitation excercise!
"The relevant authorities, including Heritage Malta, the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage and Mepa will be working together to reply and prepare the necessary briefs by February 2010,” .
Indeed ! Nice hatter's tea party that one! Who will be murdering time to escape decapitation or push the other in the tea pot?

Malta is becoming a pitiful site. Arrogance prevails. Really wonder how Piano's modern embellishment to City Gate and Royal Opera House will help us keep the World Heritage Status!! It could well be the absolute *final straw*!!! Well done GonziPn!!
And by the way, *Government should not be solely COMMITTED to preserve Valletta (and Malta's) Status....but indeed, OBLIGATED, to it, and its loyal citizens. (Not to the moguls!!)

Ara veru pajjiz patetiku.
Is this a joke, its like damaging something and then I say I am committed to preserve it.
Can the Maltese be so gullible.
And god knows how many will throw this comment in the PL bag to remain blinded by partisan politics.

Waste six years university studies to become an architect?
Judging from this column, architects are a dime a dozen, so who needs more?
Scrap the Piano project?
I believe the Opera House ruins is what made Valletta a World Heritage site!
Stop the rot? Restoration of monuments, the fortifications, St. John's, various Auberges, paving of Merchants' Street, Valletta (Floriana?) Waterfront, St. George's Square are all fine examples of the rot someone complained about.
When has Valletta last seen such a resurgence and so much restoration work?
It seems to me that everybody wants everything under heaven immediately forgetting that works which cost millions come from taxes. And, in Malta, nobody seems to be volunteering to pay more, on the contrary, judging from current news, there are masterminds behind schemes aimed to evade taxes and worse, encourage and entice others to join their subversive acts!

We have had enough briefs, reports, conferences and that massive (and extremely costly) exercise in non-planning called the Local Plans. Now we want real action to stop the rot!
