49 migrants repatriated to Ghana
A group of 49 migrants was repatriated to Ghana today after travel documents were issued by the African country.
The migrants were flown back to Accra on a chartered Air Malta flight, with security officers outnumbering the migrants two to one.
The flight was paid for by the EU in terms of the Immigration Pact.
A total of 270 migrants have so far been repatriated to various countries so far this year.

@ Denis Catania - please try to understand this. That since these illegal entrants into our island have no papers no identifications, they cannot be repatriated. They are so to say prisoners on our island. they cannot go out and they cannot abscond. So we have to tolerate their presence and permanence amongst us,, sorry to say. As much as I would love to see them repatriated. But feet on the ground, the government cannot do anything else. No country will accept these clandestini without proper papers.

Well done to Ghana and everybody else involved. This is how things should be done.

"...after travel documents were issued by the African country." Why did it take Ghana this long to issue the travel documents? This clearly shows that diplomatic relations between Ghana and Malta need to be improved. With this kind of clerical inefficiency, trade and labour exchange cannot be carried out as well as one would hope in order to strengthen economies. It's not until Ghanaians started to appear on Malta illegally that we have become aware of this shortcoming between the two governments. If governments are going to serve their respective peoples as they should, one would expect a lot better than this.

Only 49? Send them all back ASAP.
They dared to cross the sea and we should likewise dare to send them back.

OK they were returned to their own country, but what we want to know ...'How much money were each given to accept the repatriation?'.

The more repatriations and the lesser landings will make us less racist. This has become a fact of life in 2009 Malta! The authorities should sustain repatriation and stick their necks out in defence of lesser landings. This will ease the burden of racism on all of us!!!

That's good but we are still about 750 in the red for 2009. We had about a 1000 arrivals not including the ones overstaying their visas.

Dr Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici deserves to be congratulated for sending back to Ghana a substantial number of illegal immigrants. However his task will not end until the last illegal immigrant is sent back to his or her country.
