An Iraqi man was charged with threatening and assaulting four police officers who had intervened to stop a fight in St Julians on Saturday.

Gaser Salman Darman, 31, claimed yesterday that he too was trying to stop the two men who were fighting in the road where he lived, before the police arrived.

He pleaded not guilty to threatening and assaulting the police officers, three constables and a sergeant, disobeying their orders and relapsing at about 4.30 a.m.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke granted Mr Darman bail against a €200 deposit and a personal guarantee of €2,000.

Police Inspector Bernard Spiteri prosecuted. Lawyer Roberto Montalto represented Mr Darman.
