Smoke-filled bars
Why is it that although the no smoking legislation came into force some years back, one still goes to Paceville and finds smoking in all the bars and discos? Does no one enforce the law?

Reality check, please, for all you fragrant, wonderfully scented non-smokers with a "holier-than-thou" and oppressive mentality. Please answer (honestly) the following questions: (i) Do you think bars/pubs/discos would survive if arrangements at these premises were not made for smokers to smoke (in other words smoking is to be banned on site)? (ii) Whilst you think that I STINK (seems to be a favourite word amongst non-smokers), have you ever considered the possibility that you may STINK of other things? (iii) What causes the most injuries and/or premature deaths - smoking or alcohol? Drink in peace in your boring non-smoking bars/discos. Don't come out and see me in the wall-less tent outside when I'm having a cigarette. You stay with your friends in a smoke-free Haven of cheap perfurme, sweaty armpits, halitosis and fresh flatulence that goes along with the all-pervasive smell of urine from the toilets that is no longer masked by my cigarette smoke. On balance, I do know a couple of non-smokers who don't STINK but there is an exception to every rule, they say!! Tongue-in-cheek, Richard Granville Scrowston.

@Patricia Falzon: That's elementary, because the Police, wardens and Mayors are all on holiday and everybody does what he or she likes to do, the..prostitutes parading [half..naked]..along Ta' Xbiex roads close Testaferrata (filming men is temporary out of action), prostitutes parading indecently dressed (or top..or..bottom..naked) along Ta' Xbiex Road..Police..are.. maybe.. blind.. or..on.. holiday? Pavement of Ta' Xbiex Terrace [near post-box] always..blocked..by..people..having rabbit, chicken, fruits etc and vehicles..parked..on..the..double..yellow..line..which..unable old persons from walking on pavement for safety..[or..told..to..walk..in..middle..of..road???], and in winter the pavement opposite the former EU Commissioner have ten or more water culverts totally blocked and water cannot pass. Roads are in a very bad state, the two or three zebra crossings "white paint" of Ta' Xbiex Coast Road disappeared, have no lights, no other indication of being a zebra crossing. Traffic signs have now disappeared with rust and sign disintegrated. Rubbish along the beach with no one from health, or tourism, or council..come..to..cleaning..it!! No..pubic..Toilets..but..the..corners..of..Terrace..steps..are..being..used..by..the..public. Everyone does his BBQ where it is prohibited..by..the..Police..and..wardens pass..by..and they just..smile, users of BBQ throws left-over into the sea or on rocks..or..in fields..of.. Terrace. Yes everyone..is..on..holiday, that's..why..many..places..are..in..a..big..disorder..state!!!!

To add to Ms. Falzon's comment, I happened to be in a popular Salsa bar in Qawra. I used to smoke but luckily quite 1.5 years ago. It is disgusting that by the time you walk in and out of the indoor area your clothes smell of cigarettes!!. Wasn't it that bar security were also responsible to enforce these measures? Insult to injury one of the time Police officers were in a car just outside eating at a pizza place!!

I agree with your letter Patricia! I am a non-smoker and whenever I go to a club or bar in Paceville I go back home stinking of cigarettes! Enforcing this law is one of the easiest in my opinion since everyone smokes openly as if they have got nothing to hide!
The police should do more enforcement on this matter, it is a great pity that in our country we lack the discipline to respect the law and show a lack of respect to others around us.

No. Well, not really. It's a matter of low wages, poor training, poor morale... To have a quality police service one needs to put in the right ingredients, but that would mean less money for the politicians to stuff into their pockets on 'official trips' where they take their families and friends, plus their thirsty BWM ministerial motor cars, and the rest all at the taxpayers expense.
There are some dedicated police officers around who do make a marked difference, but these are the exceptional few.
