Cyclists in The Betfair Lifecycle Challenge put on their raincoats yesterday as they set off on their 2,000 kilometre trip from Istanbul, Turkey, to Damascus in Syria.

The challenge started at 7 a.m. from the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul in rainy conditions.

The initiative, which is in its 11th edition, aims to help renal patients and the transplant support group. Malta's consul in Turkey, Simon Pullicino, joined the team last Friday evening for Mass and supper.

The gruelling ride is being dedicated to cyclist Clifford Micallef, who was killed on July 30 in a hit-and-run accident at Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq.

Donations may be made by calling 5004 9065 to donate €10; 5004 9060 to donate €20; or by sending a text message to 5061 9229 to donate €11.65.
