Ancient plantations unearthed in Gozo

Archaeologists have found that troughs (in picture) and plantations in Mġarr Ix-Xini may date back to about 600 BC.

The Gozo Ministry said excavations, which began four years ago, tried to establish the date and origins of the troughs and plantations in the valley, which were probably used to cultivate vines to produce wine.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono praised the initiative by the Xewkija and Sannat local councils, who are working on the project together with the Faculty of Archaeology and the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage.

Since 2008, the Superintendence for Cultural Heritage called on MEPA to schedule the entire Ta’ Cenc area and revealed that during its inspections of the area extending from the entire Ta’ Cenc plateau towards the valley and the bay of Mgarr ix-Xini, several previously unknown archaeological features were discovered.
