Sewage makes big stain on sea in Gozo
The scenic beauty at Wied il-Mielaħ in Gozo was marred yesterday after a large brown patch of smelly sludge stretched for several metres out to sea, caused by the only sewage outfall left on that island.
Wied il-Mielaħ, in Għarb, is the only remaining sewage outfall in Gozo pumping raw drainage into the sea.
Even though the residents are aware of the outflow, the smell and extent of the outflow was so bad yesterday that readers sent in their comments and photos complaining about the damage.
In January 2008, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi inaugurated a €7.2 million sewage treatment plant in Gozo at Ras il-Hobż, which replaced the three of the four outfalls in San Blas, Wied l-Għasri and Mġarr ix-Xini.
Eventually, the Water Services Corporation will build a pumping station in Għarb that will transfer the sewage to the treatment plant, Water Services Corporation CEO Marc Muscat said.
Once this was done, the outfall would stop, he said.
However, following yesterday's complaints, the corporation was investigating whether there was a blockage in the system which might have created the large patch, he added.
John Michael Mizzi, who lives in Gozo, warned that the patch of sludge was stretching out carried by the strong winds for kilometres upstream to the main tourist beaches on the island.
"While walking in the magnificent Wied il-Mielaħ valley the sound of sewage flowing in the pipes leading to sea can be heard like a strong water stream," he said.
The situation had been highlighted several times in the media by Gozitans and criticised by Alternattiva Demokratika, who last November, said they had asked the European Commission to intervene because the outflow violated the Urban Wastewater Directive.
When contacted, a spokesman for the planning authority said it was monitoring the situation.

As someone once said the desire to become a politician should exclude you from ever doing so. By the way the rest of you Maltese as you put it didn't all vote for Gonzi's bunch did they?
I don't think much of politicians in general and that includes those who are presently in power in England. N. Ireland is actually ruled from Stormont by the way. I wouldn't vote if I were paid to.

James Tyrrell: oh, so our politicians are idiots, are they? I'd hate to learn what you think of the rest of us Maltese who elect them then.
I'd also like to hear what you think of your own politicians who rule N. Ireland from London, have sent your sons and daughters to die in two foreign wars over the last ten years, and have governed a country that has more social problems than we Maltese could ever imagine.
And finally, here's a bit of common sense that seems to have escaped you: if newspaper comments were representative of the entire Maltese population, the PL would be the governing party right now and FAA would be more than an Astroturf organization.

Now, as a taxpayer who pays for MEPA's salaries to do their work, I ask:
Why doesn't MEPA stop chasing ephemeral sun-beds on Comino?....
.... And instead of simply "monitoring the situation", goes PLUGGING that ILLEGAL drainage outflow hole, FAST!... This is inexcusable!

@ Godfrey Grima Thank your lucky stars you were cruising on a boat! Now have a look at this Swimmers Guide from the Malta Maritime Authority. Takes ages to load, but be patient. http://www.mma.gov.mt/swimmersguide.html That very same area is listed as a Swimmers Zone! It is no. 17 down the list, Id-Dahla tar-Rinella. It must be a brown flag beach. Compare it to the photo I posted earlier http://i182.photobucket.com/albums/x5/ultralemony/SewageOutflow.jpg This is a country of smoke and mirrors. I would not be surprised if most of the reports sent to the EU are pure fiction. But where do the funds go?

@John Borg. I appreciate the fact that you used the term 'some of us Maltese' as going by the comments to the papers it is not very many.
Not too sure what you mean by 'a "subject" of the Queen of England'. I'm British if that's what you mean and every bit as proud of being so as I would be if I were a born and bred Gozitan. I don't think the Queen has 'subjects' anymore as such. Most people see the Royal Family as a sort of self-sustainable tourist attraction.
By the way I totally agree that the Maltese people should have a parliament. I just don't agree that it is a priority at this point in time when most people are finding it hard to make ends meet. Nor do I agree that some Italian name should be called in to design it when there are plenty of competent Maltese architects to choose from. Nor do I agree with the proposed location or indeed the modern design. There are many things, which need money spending on them, but a new box to keep your political idiots in isn't one of them.

The photo in the link I attached is of Rinella, Wied Ghammieq, South east of Valletta and Tigne Point. Perhaps it is you who needs to brush up your geography. That is the main sewage (untreated) outflow of full EU member, Malta. This happens 24/7/365.
But you shot off your comment without bothering to check. Used to you by now.

James Tyrell: you may wish to consider that some of us Maltese are actually happy to have a proper building to house the institution that represents us. But I suppose this might be rather difficult to understand for someone who is a "subject" of the Queen of England rather than a citizen of his country.

"When the wind is from the south east, this patch extends as far as Tigne Point ..."
You've either got your geography upside down or you have no idea where Wied il-Mielaħ is.

Surely people are being too hard on the poor Gonzi Government. Remember they have much more important things to spend their money on like a nice new Piano designed Parliament building for them all to sit in! And remember that as a bonus the Maltese people are being given a nice new theatre without a roof!

The Goverment can use catchy slogans as much as it wants, what lies beneath the entire facade is all that matters, and we've been let down over and over again by this administration.

Sewage spilling is endemic this summer. Last week I was grossly embarrassed to find myself cruising, outside Grand harbour facing Kalkara, through a wide and deep stretch of stench and sewage. My three guests that day included a pretty senior EU official.
I was embarrassed both by the spill and by being governed by indolent politicians whose boundless bluster and blah seems to be the only offer available as much around us continues to collapse. Enough is enough. Surely it is time for the ruling Nationalist Party to go into a soul searching exercise and come up with a proper vision where the country truly comes first.

I also hate to think of the risks run by actors working in the Rinella water tanks during filming. The seawater in the tanks is pumped directly from that soup.

Where were MEPA and the other authorities for the last 9 years since Malta should have stopped dumping raw sewage by the year 2000 according the the Barcelona Convention?

The damage to the Maltese island's diving tourism industry by pumping raw sewage into the sea is incalcuable. The potential loss of tourism revenue far exceeds the cost of building modern efficient sewage treatment plants. It seems that the government cannot see past its own nose.
In this day and age, in a supposed modern european country, to pump raw sewage into the sea is unforgivable. The hazards to health of both the marine environment and humans is massive. Even if you dont swim in these areas, the currents carry this sludge to other beaches, or if you fish here, guess what you are eating! How many people have found themselves with eye, ear or other infections within a few days of swimming in the sea? Its high time the government really showed its green credentials and stopped polluting the environment.
Welcome to Malta and Gozo - the eco-tourism Island. Enjoy swimming in our unique brown coloured seas! This could be the next advertising campaign for the MTA!
