PL opposing demolition of oil depot - PN
The Labour Party was opposing the demolition of the Oil Depot, an industrial building that was creating an eyesore in Kalkara, the Nationalist Party's Kalkara sectional committee said.
The committee said that the removal of the building would uncover the beauty of the bastions, increase space, and make the road less dangerous.
Kalkara residents, the Fortifications Superintendent, Mepa's Heritage Advisory Committee, the Mepa board except for Labour MP Roderick Galdes and the Restoration Unit within the Resources Ministry were all for the removal of the building, the PN said.

The PN must take a look around the island, especially the southern areas. I am sure that they will find a long list of 'eyesore' areas created by their administration. The best example is the Delimara Power Station,
Who on earth would build a power plant in a pittoresque village? The answer = Only the hypocripts i.e. The PN.
.......and the list goes on with the continous extension of the Malta Freeport, the Sant. Antnin Plant, etc. etc. etc

@J. Martinelli
Surely you meant Porte Reale - that was demolished in the mid-Sixties during the dnub il-mejjet period - that should have had its limestone blocks numbered together with it-Teatru Rjal, where numbered for eventual reconstruction in lieu of the neo-fascist City Gate that your friends presented to the nation. I wonder if you were protesting then against its destruction.

How would Malta look if buildings or structures, old, new, whatever, which stand less than 100m from world heritage sites/buildings be removed? Definitely a world GEM!

J Martinelli Irrespective of whether one agrees or not the law provides that buildings such as the oil depot are considered as cultural heritage if they are more than 50 years old. So before criticizing the PL in order to defend your Gonzi darling you should know what the law provides. v.pulis They can be demolished and the occupants given an alternative site. Eddie himself said that they are disgusting or something to that effect.

@ Joe Agius kollox sew, Il-kunsill tal Birgu ma jidholx fiha( ghalkemm ghandu nteress peress li s-swar mghottija jappartjenu ghal Birgu.) Mela l-kunsill tal Kalkara kif jahsibha? @ Marco Meli Unfortunately the horrible buildings erected next to fort St. Angelo(the one at it-toqba and the ones facing Senglea) are inhabited and therefore cannot be demolished. That case was one of MEPA's first mortal sins against our heritage.

What is even more ridiculous is the fact that the LP seems to try and gain a few political points by opposing everything the government proposes even when the majority of qualified people are in agreement - a rarity in itself, regarding the removal of the Oil Depot.
However, let's not repeat previous mistakes. Let the Oil Depot be taken down stone by stone, number them, so that when MP Roderick Galdes becomes Minister of Infrastructure he can have it rebuilt.

While we are at it, why not demolish the circular structure which was build by the British and which is hiding the original Banca Giuratele in Independence Sqr. (It-Tokk) Victoria Gozo. This too would uncover the beauty of the Original Banca and increase the space and give us back the original straight way from the Citadel to St. George's Square. In the Gozitan news paper of 16 November 1952 this part is called '...dik iz-zaqq' But than again why don’t we demolish all buildings in Malta and Gozo and start living at Ggantija and in the caves? This too would uncover the original beauty of our islands and increase more space.

Isn't this ridiculous! The only time the PN speaks up about the environment is when they think they can score points off the PL. Otherwise, a profound silence.
