Sta Marija convoy commemoration
The 67th Anniversary the Sta Marija Convoy is being commemorated by the Apostleship of the Sea, based at the Emigrants Commission,Valletta, under the directorship of Mgr Philip Calleja on August 14 at Customs House, Grand Harbour, Valletta from 7 p.m.
The activity consists of a historical narration of events, hymns and moments of prayer and reflection for those lost at sea during this epic mission that went on to save wartime Malta from certain capitulation.
The sombre moments will be marked by the tolling of the Siege Bell and a gun salute by a group of WWII re-enactors in military dress who shall be portraying members of a Kings Own Malta Regiment wartime Battalion as well as a wreath laying Ceremony at sea just a few metres from the quay.
War veteran Allan Shaw, one of only two surviving crew men from the legendary oil tanker SS Ohio, a ship that was to prove so vital for the success of the critical 1942 mission, will be in attendance.
