Man awaiting appeal requests bail
Gamil Abu Bakr, 39, today filed an application requesting bail until his appeal from a judgement given after jurors last month found him guilty of aiding four Indians in an attempt to escape, is heard.
Mr Abu Bakr has effectively one more year to serve having spent four years in preventive custody. He was also given remission for good conduct.
In his application, he is calling on the Criminal Court of Appeal to grant him bail until the appeal is heard and to take into consideration that he effectively had only one more year to serve.
Now a Maltese citizen, Mr Bakr, arrived as a refugee in 1995, married a Slovenian woman in Malta and they had two children. The wife returned to her home country shortly after the smuggling court case started being heard.

Unbeleivable and unacceptable. The first time I heard this guy being called ' MALTESE CITZIEN' my blood gone up to boiling point, and still is.
I'm a 60 year NP supporter by voting and financially , but since Gonzi misfortunatly took the reigns hav'nt voted and absented from any occasion, and beleive couple of thousand done
same.
How can immigration minister be so NAIVE.
This person and all other like him MUST be evicted from or to enter MALTA, not kept at my expence in preventive custody.
Please Mr Gonzi, for MALTA sake take note what MALTESE SAY and WANT.

Why is he not stripped of his Maltese citizenship and expelled after serving his sentence?
How can he become a Maltese citizen when he came here illegally and has absolutely NO connection with Malta except an illegal one?
How cheap has Maltese citizenship been reduced by our government?
