Average salaries in Malta have held up reasonably well over the past 12 months despite the global economic downturn and increased unemployment, according to a new Salary and Labour Market Guide just released by leading recruitment experts Reed Specialist Recruitment.

Skills shortages in healthcare, retail, sales and ICT, as well as consolidation after a period of sustained growth in e-commerce and i-gaming operations in Malta have pushed up salaries in those areas in recent years.

"A closer analysis of the situation suggests that overall salary pressures will ease in the ICT development, technology and iGaming sectors with some companies continuing to expand," a statement by the company said. "Perhaps somewhat surprisingly, the financial services sector has remained buoyant, as the global credit crunch has made the country a more attractive place for firms and funds to relocate to. Additionally, there has been an increase in operations and foreign direct investment from retail and merchant banks. Demand for hospitality and manufacturing professionals has dropped, however, and this has lead to a weakening in average salaries in these sectors."

A copy of the research findings can be found on the company's new interactive website - http://www.reedglobal.com.mt - which has been created specifically to help organisations in Malta quickly and easily find the best local talent, and also to help jobseekers search and apply for a wide range of career opportunities.

David Cutajar, CEO of Reed Specialist Recruitment in Malta, said: "The research findings provide a valuable insight for employers, employees and jobseekers, and are an excellent addition to our new website which forms part of reedglobal.com - a near €300,000 investment which spans our operations across 12 countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia Pacific."
