Rose Cassar of Sliema (July 29) criticised the Sliema mayor as she considered that residents who are not car owners are being treated as second-class citizens and requested that non car owners should also be given a parking sticker.

"We too should have a right to preferential treatment," she concluded.

Could the lady, or anybody else, explain the origin of this so-called right?

I consider that residents' parking is an obscene discrimination, an assertion confirmed by our courts in the case I had instituted against the Pietà local council.

Now that the Transport Authority has sanctioned the provision of residents, parking schemes in several localities I shall take action against this authority on the basis of discrimination against its own subscribers from different localities.

Each and every citizen who pays the road tax to the authority should stand up and protest against the egoistic claims of non garage users who are behind the implementation of discriminatory parking schemes aided by mayors who, in their quest to retain their seat, succumb to blatant, discriminatory, selfish and, in the end, self-destructive schemes.
