President praises LifeCycle group for its determination
President George Abela this afternoon expressed his sadness at the loss of cyclist Cliff Micallef in a traffic accident last week and offered encouragement to his colleagues ahead of the LifeCycle Challenge, due to start on Thursday.
The cyclists today took a break from their final preparations to call on Dr Abela at San Anton Palace.
LifeCyle chairman Alan Curry said the group had lost a very close friend and had gone through a difficult period, but with the backing of the Micallef family, the group was now looking ahead at the fund-raising challenge, which would see them cycle between Istanbul and Damascus.
The group raises funds for renal patients and their treatment.

as a passionate bike rider, i really feel sorry for what happened to Cliff Micallef. He died for a noble cause. Living abroad however, i cannot help pointing out the fact that i find it strange that in malta they are always collecting money for some cause, for the Dar tal providenza, for kidney patients, for cancer patients. in the ten years i lived in germany, i realized that nobody collects money here for anything, people pay taxes and insurance(health insurance, social insurance) to be health insured and this covers for everything. why is it that in malta for every cause they have to collect money?? it is the duty of the government to see that the people paying taxes and insurance get the help they need. The taxes in malta are quite high, so i am wondering where all this money is going????? if the NI is not high enough, then they should amend it a bit, where those that can pay more contribute more, while the less fortunate are helped. But the people have to see that the taxes they are paying are being used sensibly, at least that is my opinion
