Gas price increase underlines need for cost of living adjustment - GWU
The 40% increase in LPG gas prices further reinforced the need for the people to benefit from cost of living wage adjustments, the GWU said in a statement this afternoon.
The union strongly criticised the increase, announced on Saturday, and said that at a time of recession, the least one expected were price increases such as this.
It pointed out that this was the second gas price increase in four months and came at a time when many people could already hardly make ends meet. This new increase would put further pressure on the people's pockets and further dampen demand, thus also affecting business, the union said.

now that we are going to pay full costs for gas, lets hope we get full bottles.
ie 12Kg cyinder should weigh when full 24Kgs, I weigh mine and so far never had a full one.
Area Marsascala
People should weigh their gas bottles more regular.

Lets hope that now you are charging full price that we get full bottles, I weigh mine and so far I never had a full 24 Kgs for a 12Kg cylinder capacity, I shall be buying next week and hope that from now we get 12Kks of gas instead of 9Kgs.
Area Marsascala
I have verified with EneMalta that a 12Kg cylinder should be 24 Kgs when full.

A 12 kilo cylinder which is mostly used by households used to cost €5.40 prior to last April, now it costs €10.50, an increase of €5.10 nearly doubling the price.
A 15 kilo cylinder which is used mainly by restaurants etc used to cost €6.73 prior to last April, now it costs €13, an increase of €6.27 again nearly doubling in price.
A 25 kilo cylinder used to cost €12 prior to April, now it costs 20.50, an increase of €8.50.
How about the UHM asking for a similar wage, salary and pension increase of Lm125 per week as Gonzi had awarded himself, his ministers and parliamentary secretaries without having to resort to industrial action?
It had asked for some Lm9 per week increase years ago didn't it?

COLA should be given to ALL, whether they are employed or unemployed, workers or pensioners, because when they go to buy anything they are not asked whether they have had their COLA but the price of everything is the same for everyone. Not being given COLA would mean that the standard of living would continue to go down more than it is now and we are presently in a position where most people are not making ends meet, something which you do not appear top be suffering from Calleja.

The GWU has not learnt its lessons yet. The cost of living adjustment (COLA) is only necessary for non-unionised citizens. It should only be given to the unemployed, pensioners and other persons who depend on taxpayers' handouts to survive. The others who are gainfully occupied should ask for fair pay increases through their unions if need be during collective agreement negotiations. The COLA is a carryover from socialist times that the PN have never had the courage to dismantle. The price that we pay is heavier taxes and inflated payrolls that render our private sector non competitive. Wake up GWU before you do not have any members left to defend but just redundant employees looking for a job.

Here we go again, with both political parties just saying half the truth and only say what they think is convenient to them, still thinking that the people can be fooled. The party in government, is probably doing the right thing to do away with the subsidy, and paving the way for open competition, however it’s a half done job. For the government to be credibly, it’s not enough that they say they are stopping the subsidy, they must also commit that the savings from this are then in turn passed back to the people via less taxes, therefore effectively making the process neutral for the people. If this is not done, then the opposition is right when they say that the government is increasing taxes and cost of living. On the other hand, it’s absolution childish that the opposition, on its media, just keeps boosting that it was right that the government was going to increase the prices, but not even a mention of the removal of the subsidy. May I ask when we are going to have the privilege of having a decent discussion, and have serious political parties in this island that really do their job?

What do you expect from a monopoly. Reminds me of the cell phone saga when there was only one operator. And all this with the blessing of the EU. Where are our MEP's?

Why should the users of gas be subsidised by people who use other forms of energy sources? If a gas user finds out that it doesn't pay him to use gas then he should switch over to electric appliances. Why does everybody expect to be propped up by others? When are we going to learn to stand on our own feet and not just lie back and expect others to come to our aid? We are a population of leeches. Obviously nobody likes to pay more for a service but we must all realise that goods and services are at a price and that the suppliers have not only to cover production costs but make a decent profit; they are not charitable institutions.People here are always grumbling about rising costs, but they still can afford a car and want to take out bank loans to purchase their home. And what's more, people who should know better should not encourage this form of parasitism which is part of Maltese culture. Malta is supposed to have become independent 45 years ago but I am afraid it takes more than a couple of generations to turn human parasites into fully-fledged self-supporting species.
