Court rejects karozzini owners' pleas to stay at Palace square
A court this afternoon turned down an application by 43 karozzini owners for a warrant to stop the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) from relocating their stand on the Palace square in Valletta.
The ADT plans to move the stand because the square is being embellished and turned into a pedestrian zone.
The cab owners argued that without a presence in the city centre, they would be unable to work, but the ADT said it could not retain the stand for karozzini stand in a pedestrian zone.
The court in rejecting the application, said the karozzini owners had no right to expect to operate at a particular place or road since such issues were decided by the transport authorities. The fact that the karozzini had been based at Palace square for a number of years did not give them the right to stay there.
It was up to the ADT to decide where the karozzini stand should be located the court said. The ADT did not have an obligation to consult anyone,although that was recommended.

@pace gouder.
Are you saying that charges maybe a bit too high? For a trip around Mdina which lasts a couple of minutes and for 2 adults and 2 babies I was charged more than Lm10 each person. That is the "karozzin owner" would have made his day and more. Isn't this - overcharging people - a threat to their livelihood.

The Palace area was not the ideal place, a tourist after walking so far knows the way out, so they were loosing money. I suggest arrengaments can be made in Renzo's plains, at least they be at the entrance, another 40 votes won or lost.

When is something going to be done about the karozzini damaging the paving of Mdina ? Did the karozzini owners pay for the paving ? Possibly had the karozzini owners taken the initiative and covered their wheels with rubber they would not now have been banned from Palace square.

I fully agree with mr. Lino Spiteri's article in todays Times entitled VALLETTA ERRORWS ON THE TROT. The part about the 43 Karozzini is quite correct. These are facing a threat to their livelihood. Now from my part i have to say It is important that these owners are found another site which is visible to Tourists who wish to have a ride round our city. Why have these Karrozzini owners not told of another site? One other word to Karrozzin owners. Please take care of your horses because of the sun. Also many Tourists complain that your charges are a bit high so try and agree between you on the price and keep it as reansonable as possible.
