A court this afternoon turned down an application by 43 karozzini owners for a warrant to stop the Malta Transport Authority (ADT) from relocating their stand on the Palace square in Valletta.

The ADT plans to move the stand because the square is being embellished and turned into a pedestrian zone.

The cab owners argued that without a presence in the city centre, they would be unable to work, but the ADT said it could not retain the stand for karozzini stand in a pedestrian zone.

The court in rejecting the application, said the karozzini owners had no right to expect to operate at a particular place or road since such issues were decided by the transport authorities. The fact that the karozzini had been based at Palace square for a number of years did not give them the right to stay there.

It was up to the ADT to decide where the karozzini stand should be located the court said. The ADT did not have an obligation to consult anyone, although that was recommended.
